Zambian police nab eight riotous Tanzanian drivers at border townEight Tanzanian truck drivers who rioted on Friday at the Nakonde border linking Zambia and Tanzania were arrested by Zambian police and charged with riotous behavior, local media reported on Saturday. The eight drivers were expected to appear in court on Saturday in Tanzania, independent newspaper The Post said. According to the paper, the truck drivers were complaining that they had lost large quantities of fuel recently from their trucks parked inside the Zambia customs yard. The drivers later teamed up with some call boys and other thugs and blocked the entrance to Tanzania. Quick action by Zambian security officers prevented the demonstrating Tanzanians from destroying property as they did last time. This is the second time Tanzanians rioted on Zambian side, bringing business at the border into standstill. In last riot a month ago, Tanzanian nationals armed with stones and sticks ran amok in protest against the death of a Tanzanian in the Zambian police cell. The riot that was later joined by Zambians left scores of vehicles on both sides damaged or burnt. Source: Xinhua |
